Photography Guidelines

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR PHOTOGRAPHY?

We love professional looking photography and so do our customers! Strong product photos help to build your brand identity and communicates how great your product is. Whether it’s indoors or outdoors, on location or in a studio, your brand imagery is totally up to you.
We highly encourage all our sellers to have consistent, professional looking photographs and professional styling of your products.

WHAT IMAGES SHOULD BE INCLUDED WITH THE PRODUCT?

You should have a main ‘Hero’ image and up to nine (9) additional product images on your product listing.
Main ‘Hero’ Image – your ‘Hero’ image is your main image. It is the one that is shown in all product searches, featured promotion and social media promotion. It should be a clear image, lifestyle shot and ‘in-situ’ with a pleasing background and square.
Secondary ‘Hero’ Image – This can be a square flat-laid image eg. a soap flat-laid with flowers around it.

Additional Images: aside from your main ‘hero’ image – these images can be portrait or landscape as required. Your additional images you could include:
– a close-up or close-up of features eg. a close up of the packaging or texture
shots from each angle of the product, to better show-off your item eg. the top, bottom and side of the soap bar
– a shot that is ‘deep-etched’ or all-white background eg. a soap bar on a solid white background
– a shot of the product ‘in-use’ or in context that is different to the ‘hero’ shot eg. a soap in a soap dish on a basin or in the palm of a hand with water splashes and suds.

I WANT TO CREATE THE IMAGES MYSELF, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?

If you would like to create the images yourself here are some tips to help make them suitable for the site:
All Products

  • Natural lighting: We want your shots to look as natural as possible – try to shoot in natural light or, if you have to add light to the shots, keep any artificial lighting as natural-looking as possible.
  • Great backgrounds – Make sure your backgrounds are pleasing and don’t include any distractions that distract eyes from the product. The product must feature! Backgrounds can be ‘in-situ’, on location or flat-laid. Just ensure that your brand and products families have a consistent look and feel to them which will help sell them and your brand.
  • Limit your editing: Don’t over retouch or add obvious or gimmicky filters, borders or watermarks to your shots. For product images, we also don’t allow collages – product images should contain only one product and one shot.
  • Images which don’t make it clear what is being sold: For example, when shooting jewellery please don’t stack/layer items – it must be clear which item is being sold in your listing
  • Someone else’s imagery: We prefer you to use your own imagery and if you are not using your own you must have rights to use the images.
  • No Black and white images: these don’t help products sell.
  • Wearable items: All wearable items should primarily be displayed worn. Static product shots are ok as secondary product shots.
  • No Stark lighting: We want your shots to look as natural as possible – try to shoot in natural light or, if you have to add light to the shots, keep any artificial lighting as natural-looking as possible
  • No Mannequin shots: Your Hero product Image should always be on a model.* Please don’t upload shots featuring more than two different models for the same item eg. you may wish to as a fuller-sized model to show larger sizings.
  • Hanging/Flat-lay shots – these are ok to be used as secondary/additional photographs.
  • No Catwalk shots – these are best kept to social media/blog purposes.

TIPS:

  • DSLR Cameras – try to use a digital camera where possible, the quality of iphone photos may not be as good.
  • Shoot for a Square – always have an instagram square in mind when shooting so you will always have a ‘Hero’ image. Many portrait or landscape photos can be cropped into a square, but it’s worth keeping this in mind when shooting so they can be cropped if needed.
  • Consistency – try to plan your product shoots, and what the image will look like and shoot them all at once, take a lot of shots, then you will have consistent photos for your brand.
  • Shoot outside in solid shade – this will help to keep the images free of shadows on flat-lays as much as possible.
  • Shoot in the late afternoon/evening – especially for shots of people, this is when the light is at it’s nicest and people and backgrounds will look more flattering and images look better.
  • Flat-lay Image Backgrounds – Try using granite kitchen countertops, floating floorboards, A2 white paper for backgrounds for flat-lays and keep your flat-lays consistent with your brand.
  • Jewellery – (if you only have one pair) these can be shot in the palm of your hand.
  • Purchase a Light-box – this will greatly assist with small product photography and white backgrounds.
