About the Artist: Joycie Morton Petyarre
Joycie Morton Petyarre was born in Alice Springs in 1976 and began painting at the age of nineteen. She is the daughter of Betty Mills Pwerle, sister of Cindy Morton, and mother of fellow artist Nikita Inkamala. Joycie and Nikita started painting for Mbantua Gallery in 2017.
She carries many dreamings passed down from her grandmother, the late Big Betty Kemarre, who was part of the renowned Utopia Women’s Batik Group. From her grandmother, Joycie learned hunting, bush tucker knowledge, bush medicine, and painting, all of which influence her vibrant and symbolic art.
Today, Joycie continues to share her culture through contemporary mediums, balancing her art practice with raising her seven children.
