Punu Aboriginal Art Pouch

This Punu Aboriginal Art Pouch is a beautiful gift designed by Cynthia Burke of Maruku Arts. The style of work is called pyrography or pokerwork. It uses a red-hot poker or piece of wire heated in a campfire to burn designs into wood. Some artists also use electrical burning tools which create finer design work.

These zipped pouches are made from a printed cotton canvas. The design represents Punu or wood burnt with a pokerwork burning design from Aboriginal artist, Cynthia Burke.

These handy little pouches are great to use as a small jewellery pouch or to keep coins in the car. You can use them for keeping a range of small things and bits-and-bobs.

Each pouch comes with a tag with the artist’s name, photo and information on it. Royalties from this product go back to the artist and their community.

About the Artist and Artwork

Artwork based on art by Cynthia Burke. Cynthia is a highly skilled Punu maker. Punu is the Pitjantjatjara/Yankunytjatjara word for wood, and refers to the traditional artifacts carved from local hard timbers, usually mulga. The design is applied using hot wire to burn traditional stories and patterns into the surface of the wood. Cynthia is a master Punu maker.
