The Artwork
During ceremony on the Tiwi Islands a series of dances are performed, some are totemic and some serve to act out the narrative of newly composed songs. Participants in these ceremonies are painted with different natural coloured ochres.in varying designs, transforming the dancers and in some cases providing protection against recognition by spirits. The designs an be applied to face and body and in different ways. These significant artistic designs are called ‘Jilamara’
